How to Upload a Font in Canva

Can I upload a font to Canva on the free plan?

I wanted to clear this question up before diving into the how-to. While the Brand Kit section of Canva allows you to add a few custom colors, it does not currently support uploading fonts as a free user. In order to upload, you’ll have to upgrade to their Premium plan ($12.99/mo).

How do I upload a font to Canva?

Uploading a font to Canva is very easy! To start, make sure the font you intend to upload is either .OTF, .TTF. or WOFF. Next, open up Canva and navigate to the home page. From here:

  • Click on “Brand Kit” in the bottom left of the home page.

  • In the lower right, you’ll see a “Brand Fonts” section.

  • Under “Brand Fonts” click the “Uploaded Fonts” tab.

  • Upload your font in the upload area and that’s it!

Can I upload an Adobe font to Canva?

Adobe Fonts is a part of Adobe Creative Cloud, which as you might’ve guessed—is a cloud! This means that you cannot download any fonts available on Adobe Fonts. This thread contains a helpful discussion on the best way to approach this. If you have a specialty font you use in Adobe and want to use on Canva, you would have to go purchase that font from the type foundry that created the font.

A commenter in the thread I shared above helpfully pointed out that if you go this route, you need to take a good look at the EULAs (End User License Agreements) for whatever font you are interested in purchasing to make sure the usage you intend to do is in line with their licensing guidelines. Fonts can be very expensive to purchase through a type foundry, so this is a good thing to keep in mind when selecting a brand font and choosing what tools you will be using it in. Type design is a very special craft so if you can support a type designer that is also great! A good font can truly inject a ton of unique personality into your brand.

Can I upload a Google font to Canva?

Odds are, many of the free fonts available on Google are already available on Canva. However, if the font you’re using is not supported on Canva already you can definitely upload one to Google. Per the Google Font website, Google Font downloads are OpenType format with the subformats .TTF and .OTF. Canva supports both of these formats, which means that yes, you can upload Google fonts to Canva by following the same import instructions as above.

The nice thing about Google Fonts is that they show suggested pairings for font selections, have a very user friendly site, and make it very easy to filter for what you’re looking for. I always start there if I’m searching for a free font.

Why upload your own font to Canva?

The main reason someone might choose to upload a font to Canva is to match a pre-existing brand guideline for consistency. I also want to mention that just because a font is free, doesn’t mean it’s bad! I recommend checking out sites like TypeWolf to learn about high-quality fonts, how to use them, and even free alternatives to pricier well-known fonts.
